Climate Heating in New England More Rapidly Than Most Places on Earth, Analysis Shows.

The US region famous for its colonial history, maple syrup and frigid, snow-bound winters is undergoing a rapid transformation. New research indicates that New England is heating up more quickly than almost anywhere else on the globe.

Unprecedented Pace of Transformation

The speed of temperature increase in New England makes it the fastest-heating region of the contiguous United States, according to the study. The pace of its warming has reportedly increased significantly in the past five years.

"The temperature is not only increasing, it's speeding up," said a lead researcher on the project. "It's really accelerated in recent years, which was unexpected to me. Our regional climate is shifting in a new direction, after being largely consistent for thousands of years."

The research places the north-eastern US among the fastest-warming zones in the world, together with the Arctic and sections of Europe and China. "New England is now heading towards being like the south-eastern US," the researcher added.

Study Methodology and Results

For the study, researchers analyzed three datasets on daily temperature extremes and snowpack dating back to 1900. The analysis encompassed the six states of the New England region.

They found that New England has heated up by an average of 4.5 degrees Fahrenheit from 1900 to 2024. This far exceeds the global average, with the planet warming by approximately 1.3 degrees Celsius in the same period.

"That is very fast warming, which is concerning," said the researcher.

Notable Climate Patterns

  • Nighttime temperatures are rising more quickly than maximum temperatures.
  • Winters are heating up at double the speed of other times of year.
  • The severe cold New England is known for is being reduced.

Marine Influences and the "Heat Battery"

A major cause for this unusual accumulation of heat may be changes in the North Atlantic. The world's oceans are taking in more than 90% of the excess heat trapped by greenhouse gases.

In the north Atlantic, an increase of meltwater from Greenland’s melting glaciers is disrupting the Atlantic current. This is directing heated ocean water into the coastal waters, congregating heat along the coastline that is then pushed inland by prevailing winds.

"The excess heat from climate change is being stored in the sea like a huge storage unit," explained the researcher. "This is now being discharged into the air and New England is a recipient of that energy."

Consequences on Life and Weather

Once seen as a relatively stable region, New England has suffered severe weather shocks in the past decade, including devastating flooding and prolonged drought.

The increasing temperatures poses a threat to iconic aspects of regional life:

  • Maple syrup production is facing challenges by changing seasonal patterns.
  • Cold-weather activities are impacted; an ice hockey tournament on Vermont and New Hampshire lakes has been canceled or relocated multiple times due to unsafe ice conditions.
  • Ski resorts have faced difficulties because of inadequate snow.

"I reside just north of Boston and when I arrived in the 1990s I used to skate on the ponds all the time," said the researcher. "That tradition has pretty much disappeared from large parts of southern New England."
