More than 250 individuals have been arrested in Charlotte, North Carolina, as part of continuing federal immigration enforcement operations, according to authority reports.

Growing Federal Operations

Charlotte constitutes the newest American city to experience strengthened federal involvement, following similar operations in bigger metropolitan areas like Chicago and Los Angeles previously. Federal authorities have claimed that those detained include individuals with criminal backgrounds and gang members.

Regional Opposition

However, elected officials and residents have vocally opposed the arrests, which federal authorities have called "Operation Charlotte's Web". The state's top elected official has claimed that people are being singled out based on their racial background.

"We've observed covered, heavily armed agents in tactical attire driving plain vehicles, focusing on American individuals based on their appearance, utilizing racial bias and apprehending arbitrary people in public spaces," declared the top official. "This methodology is not enhancing our protection."

Official Position

In a newly released statement, a federal spokesperson stated that the initiative has resulted in the detention of "some of the most dangerous criminal unauthorized persons", including organized crime affiliates.

Other individuals taken into custody had been found guilty for multiple crimes, including violence toward law enforcement agents, operating vehicles under influence, larceny and manipulating government documents, according to the agency.

Local Response

The city's mayor, likewise a Democratic Party member, urged federal authorities to function with "consideration" for the city's values. She also praised those who took part in substantial numbers on Saturday to oppose the federal government's measures in the city.

Federal officials have not revealed how long the operations will last. Chicago's operation commenced in September and persists in progress. The chief executive stated he's monitoring reports that the initiative will extend to Raleigh, another North Carolina municipality, subsequently.
