UN Removes Penalties on Syrian President Ahead of Presidential Visit

The UN Security Council voted in favour to a United States-backed measure ending penalties on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria prior to his presidential meeting the coming week.

He was appointed interim leader subsequent to commanding an insurgent campaign that removed the previous leader in December 2024, bringing to a close over a decade of civil war.

America's diplomat to the UN Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "an emphatic political statement" that recognised Syria was in "a fresh chapter" following Assad's ouster.

Previously, he faced UN sanctions while commanding the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), previously associated with al-Qaeda. Washington eliminated the group from its registry of international terrorist organizations during July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister the interior minister.

Syria's foreign minister welcomed the removal of these restrictions, posting on social media: "The nation shows its gratitude to the United States and allied countries for their support the Syrian nation and citizens."

Upcoming White House Meeting

The Syrian leader's Washington trip this coming Monday occurs subsequent to President Trump stated the Middle Eastern president achieved "significant advancement" in establishing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.

Subsequent to their talks, Trump said Sharaa had "a real shot at pulling it together".

The two leaders convened initially in May, when Trump visited Riyadh on a tour of the region.

After that meeting, Trump portrayed Sharaa as a "tough guy" possessing a "powerful background".

His former militant faction operated as the terrorist network's partner in Syria until he severed ties in 2016.

Previous US Visit

Monday's visit is not Sharaa's first trip to the United States during this period. This past fall, he became the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to present to the United Nations gathering in New York in almost 60 years.

During his address, he declared the nation was "restoring its proper position within the global community" and demonstrated unity with the people of Gaza.
